Grants available to Law Enforcement Agencies
to Establish a “Drug Collection for Proper Disposal” Program
The Department of Environmental Quality is offering law enforcement agencies a one-time grant, up to $1,000, to establish a “Drug Collection for Proper Disposal” program. This funding can be used to pay for: collection boxes, signage, evidence handling, incineration, advertising or associated expenses.
Requirements to secure this funding include:
- Establishment of a “Drug Collection for Proper Disposal” policy which uses evidence handling protocols with final destruction of the collected drugs through incineration at a DEQ permitted incinerator;
- Compliance with DEA Requirements;
- Placement of clearly marked, secured and locked collection bins in an accessible area which is monitored by the agency;
- Residents will not be required to provide personal information or pay for disposal service;
- Reporting to DEQ of the pounds of medications collected;
- Advertising of the program through normal communications with the pubic.

Before applying for grant funding, please read the program summary prepared by Captain Armand Glick, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, Southwest Precinct. Captain Glick established a medication collection program for the Sheriff's Office which now has bins at three locations. Captain Glick is available to mentor other law enforcement agencies on how to get started.
